Fridge and freezer collection

A fridge cannot go in with the general waste, because the gases in its cooling system and its insulation have to be taken out at a proper treatment site before the metal can be recycled. That is why the council charges for collecting one, why the tip wants it in a separate bay, and why a fridge left in a garage tends to stay there for years. We collect it from wherever it is, the kitchen, the utility room or the garage, and it goes for proper treatment with the rest of the electricals. The only thing we ask is that it is switched off, emptied and defrosted the day before, because anything still plugged in or wet cannot travel. The price is off our own list: £66 for a fridge, a fridge freezer or an upright freezer, and £114 for a chest freezer, plus a call-out charge from £50 depending on where you are. If the washing machine is going at the same time, it is £45 on the same visit. Switched off, emptied and defrosted the day before, with the water mopped up. A fridge still running or still dripping cannot go on the vehicle. To a site that takes the gases and the insulation out properly before the metal is recycled. Not into general waste. Anything that can be used again goes to local charities and to people who are homeless, and what can be recycled is recycled.
