Old Barking and new Barking
Barking is two towns at once. The old one is round the abbey ruins and St Margaret's, where the abbey was founded in 666, and in the streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces that spread out from the centre. The new one is down by the Thames at Barking Riverside, thousands of flats on former industrial land, with an Overground station that only opened in 2022. The house clearances are different in each. A terrace in old Barking is a carry through the front with no rear access and usually a loft; a flat at Riverside is a lift, a long corridor and a building manager who wants to know when you are coming. We do both, quoting each from photos or a video so the price reflects the building as well as what is in it, and the £12.50 London zone charge appears as its own line. The council charges most residents for its large item collection, which runs on weekdays, and the nearest reuse and recycling centre, Jenkins Lane, bars Lutons and tail lifts and wants vans booked in. We quote the whole house in one figure, from £349 for one bedroom, and you pay afterwards.
