A hill town, and the steps are not a detail

Billericay runs up a hill, and a lot of its older housing runs up it too: front doors above pavement level with steps down to the footway, and gardens that step again behind. The High Street is the largest conservation area in Basildon borough, with listed buildings, protected trees and even listed telephone boxes in it, and the property behind and beside it is the same period and shape.

Those steps decide more than people expect. Basildon's own collection terms say that where a property has steps up from the public footpath, the items have to be at the bottom of them, at pavement level, by half past seven in the morning. So on a lot of Billericay addresses the council's service starts only after somebody has already done the hardest part of the job.

  • A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
  • You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
  • The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
  • It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.

What house clearance in Billericay takes in

What a Billericay clearance takes in, and why the steps matter to the price.

Get a price for this
  • Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, with the steps and the stairs counted into the quote rather than discovered on the day.
  • End of tenancy clearance. Between lets, back to bare floors, and on a stepped frontage the carry down to the pavement is the part that takes the time.
  • Hoarder clearance. Sorted rather than shovelled. Sorted, not shovelled. Paperwork, photographs and anything of value are lifted out first and handed to you.
  • Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. Worth saying plainly: the council's own terms say it cannot collect from within a house, flat, garage or shed, so a full shed is never their job.
  • Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In the older houses near the High Street the hatch decides the day rather than the amount.
  • Storage unit clearance. Stripped out and the keys returned, so the monthly charge ends. Basildon caps a booking at five items and charges the same £30 whether you book one or five, so a unit was never going down that route.

Thirty pounds for up to five items, and nothing from inside

Basildon's bulky collection is a flat £30 for up to five items, paid in full at booking by card, with no reduction for booking fewer. So one sofa costs the same as five things, which is either good value or poor value depending entirely on how much you have.

The limits are where it stops being an option for a clearance. It cannot be collected from within a house, a flat, a garage or a shed. It has to be in the stated place by 7.30am, at pavement level if there are steps. Only items two people can lift on to the vehicle are taken, and loose material has to be bagged or bundled first, with each bag counting as one of your five.

Pitsea Recycling Centre is the other route and it is genuinely one of the better ones. It takes limited DIY waste from your own household and it does book in vans, pick-ups and large trailers, which most Essex sites near here refuse. It still needs a slot for every visit and a house clearance is still a great many visits.

Questions we get asked about this

Ask us something else
There are eight steps up to the front door.

That is normal here and it is priced in. Basildon's own service makes you bring everything down to pavement level first; we do not.

The shed and the garage are the worst of it.

They are the part the council explicitly cannot collect from. For us it is the same quote as the house, so tell us roughly what is in them.

Do you cover Little Burstead and Great Burstead?

Yes, and Ramsden Heath and Stock. Say the postcode when you call; reaching you is already inside the figure.
