Built to the pavement edge, and the way out is through an arch

Brentwood Borough's own conservation appraisal describes Ingatestone High Street as linear development mostly built up to the pavement edge creating tight enclosure, with architecture running from the 16th to the early 19th century and eaves heights from single-storey cottages to three-storey Georgian fronts. It has been a conservation area since November 1969.

The sentence in that document that matters most to us is about the backs. 'Carriage arches, narrow openings and breaks in the building line lead off the High Street providing vehicle and pedestrian access to backlands', and there is 'a good survival of undeveloped rear yards accessed through carriage arches'. That is the whole job here. You are not carrying a wardrobe round the side of the house, because there is no side. You are taking it through a brick arch built for a cart, or out of the front door onto a narrow pavement.

  • A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
  • You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
  • The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
  • It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.

What house clearance in Ingatestone takes in

What an Ingatestone clearance takes in, and how it leaves the building.

Get a price for this
  • Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, and in a High Street cottage the route out is planned before anything is lifted.
  • End of tenancy clearance. Between lets, back to bare floors, with the load going out through the arch rather than past the shopfront.
  • Hoarder clearance. Sorted rather than shovelled. Sorted, not shovelled. Papers, photographs and anything of value are put aside for you before the load begins.
  • Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. The rear yards behind the High Street have outbuildings in them that have not been opened in years, and they come through the same arch as everything else.
  • Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In a 16th or 17th century cottage the stair is the whole constraint and it is the reason we look before we price.
  • Storage unit clearance. Brentwood Borough charges £25 for the first item and £15 for each one after, which is the figure a unit full of furniture gets weighed against. We clear it out and hand it back so the rent stops running.

Mountnessing is two miles away and shut on Tuesdays

The nearest recycling centre is Mountnessing, on Roman Road, and it is barely outside the village. That sounds convenient until you read the rules on it. It does not accept DIY waste or rubble at all. It does not accept bookings for vans, pick-ups or large trailers. And it is closed every Tuesday.

So for a house clearance the site down the road is a car, on six days out of seven, with nothing structural in it. If you hire a van to do it properly, that site will not book you in and you are driving to Brentwood or Chelmsford instead.

The council will collect bulky items at £25 for the first and £15 for each extra, out and visible by 7.30am, and electricals are not included in that at all so a cooker and a fridge need a second arrangement. That is a reasonable answer for three items and no answer at all for a cottage that has been lived in for forty years.

Questions we get asked about this

Ask us something else
The only way out is through the arch to the back yard.

That is the normal shape here and it is fine. Tell us the width when you ring and the right vehicle turns up rather than the biggest one.

There is nowhere to park on the High Street.

There rarely is, and the pavements are narrow at the north end. We work to short stops and load in runs rather than blocking the street.

Do you cover Fryerning and Mountnessing as well?

Yes, and Stock and Margaretting. Give us the postcode when you ring and the figure already covers getting to you.
