Redbridge rations building waste, and that is the whole story

There is a rule in this borough that almost nobody knows about until they hit it. Redbridge classes building and DIY material as 'restricted waste', makes you book a visit to bring any of it, and caps each household at 1,000kg in a rolling twelve months. Spend the allowance in November and you are waiting until the following November for the next one.

For one bathroom that is fine. For a house being done up room by room over a year, which is most of what happens in Wanstead, the allowance is gone by spring. And the council's bulky collection will not take building or DIY waste at all, so once the allowance is used there is no council route left of any kind. That is the gap we get rung about here, week in week out.

Or send a photo, which is quicker

  • A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
  • You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
  • The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
  • It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.

Rubbish removal in Wanstead is this same job

Rubbish removal, rubbish clearance and waste clearance are three names for one thing here: a load the borough either rations or refuses. One vehicle and one published list, so all three words share one page.

What waste clearance in Wanstead takes in

The jobs this covers in Wanstead, including everything the borough rations.

Get a price for this
  • Garage clearance. Where there is one. Behind the High Street it is more often a rear yard off a lane, or a store under the stairs of a converted house.
  • Garden clearance. Small gardens, yards and the strips behind the shops. Green waste here usually comes out through a lane rather than round the side of a house.
  • Builders waste clearance. Plasterboard, timber, tiles, worktops and rubble. This is the load Redbridge rations at 1,000kg a year and excludes from its collection completely.
  • Fly-tip clearance. Waste dumped in a lane, a rear yard or against a wall. The same lanes that make the village workable also make it easy to leave something in one overnight.
  • Wait and load service. Loaded while we are there and away on the same visit. On a High Street with no rear vehicle access that is often the only version that works.
  • Hazardous waste clearance. Some of what comes out of a refit cannot travel with general waste. Tell us what is in there before the day and you get a straight yes or no on whether it can travel.
  • Warehouse clearance and rip out. Warehouses, stores and units emptied and ripped out, fittings included.
  • Shop clearance and rip out. Shop fits pulled out on the High Street and Cambridge Park Road, ready to give the keys back.

No Lutons, no tippers, nothing over 3,500kg, and cameras on the gate

Chigwell Road at Woodford Bridge is Redbridge's recycling centre and its vehicle rules rule out most of what anybody would actually hire. Nothing over 3,500kg gets on the site. No Luton van, and no van with a tail lift or a tipper, can enter at all. If you turn up in a van you are asked for the V5C logbook to prove the weight, and there are number plate recognition cameras there specifically to stop builders and other people bringing commercial waste in.

On top of that, any building or DIY material is 'restricted waste': it needs a booked visit, and the household allowance is 1,000kg in a rolling year. The council's bulky collection is no help either, because it does not take building or DIY waste at all, and beyond the one free three-item collection a year it is £15.20 an item.

So for anything heavier than furniture in this borough, a company with a vehicle and a transfer station is not the expensive option, it is usually the only one. We price off a published load list, show the £12.50 zone line on its own, and put the whole figure in writing before you are booked in.

Questions we get asked about this

Ask us something else
I have used my 1,000kg allowance. Can you take the rest?

Yes, and that call is a large share of our Wanstead work. There is no annual cap on what we can take away.

Will a Luton get down our lane?

Sometimes, and sometimes it is a smaller vehicle and two runs. Tell us the lane and we will tell you which before you book, not on the day.

Will I be billed for ULEZ?

All of Wanstead is in the zone, so the £12.50 line is on the quote before you commit.
