Bishop's Stortford runs a listed and tightly built town centre against newer estates on the edges, and a clearance is a different job depending which one you are in. What a whole-property job takes in on a town split between two counties.
- Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, anything being kept set aside before a thing is loaded.
- End of tenancy clearance. East Herts crews cannot come inside a property, so anything going that way has to be out on the boundary first. We load from where it stands and leave bare floors ready to photograph.
- Hoarder clearance. Worked through room by room rather than shovelled out. The Dunmow Road site is shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which is what defeats most people trying to do it themselves in stages. Papers and photographs are put aside for you as they turn up.
- Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out, and on the estates that is the same visit as the house rather than a second booking.
- Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In the older town-centre property the stair turn decides the day.
- Storage unit clearance. East Herts books soft and non-soft furnishings as two separate collections at £61.20 each, so a mixed unit would be two of them. We empty it in one go and it goes back to the operator.
Two bookings for one van load, and a tip shut two days a week
East Herts Council collects bulky items and the pricing has a catch worth knowing. From 1 April 2026 it is £61.20 for up to three soft-furnished items and £61.20 for up to three non-soft ones, then £17.00 per extra item of the same type, capped at six items. Soft and non-soft have to be booked and paid for separately, because the two have to be kept apart on the way out.
In practice that means a sofa and a fridge is not one collection at £61.20. It is two collections at £61.20 each. The crews also cannot come inside, so everything has to be out and accessible before they arrive.
The tip has its own catch. Bishop's Stortford Recycling Centre is on Woodside Industrial Estate off Dunmow Road, CM23 5RG, and it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Five days a week, 8.30am to 4pm. Worth checking before you load a car, because plenty of people have not.

Can you get a vehicle into the town centre streets?
Sometimes only a small one, and often not to the door. It becomes a carry to the nearest legal spot, and that is priced in rather than added later.
Do we need to have everything outside before you come?
No. That is the council collection's rule, not ours. We come in and carry it out, which is the part you are paying for.
Is a house clearance quoted per item like the council collection?
No. Per item gets expensive fast and caps out at six. A property is quoted on the load size, in writing, before it is booked.
