An ePass, not a booking, and a van rule that catches Essex out
Hertfordshire does this differently from Essex. There is nothing to book. You register for a free ePass, a camera reads your number plate at the gate, and you turn up whenever the site is open. A household can hold three: three for cars, or two for cars and one for a van and trailer.
Bishop's Stortford sits on the county line, so this site takes both Hertfordshire and Essex council tax payers. If you live on the Essex side you need a free car ePass of your own, one per household, as well as proof of address, and it is worth registering before you load the car rather than at the gate. The van and trailer ePass does not work that way at all: it is for Hertfordshire residents only, so a car from the Essex side is fine and a van is not.
And it is household waste only. Waste from a business, a charity or any other organisation is not accepted, and DIY waste only in limited amounts. Add the Tuesday and Wednesday closure and there is a fair amount to get right before you set off.

I live on the Essex side. Can I use the Dunmow Road tip?
With a car, yes, but register for the free Essex car ePass first and take proof of address. With a van or a trailer, no, because that ePass is for Hertfordshire residents only.
Which days is it shut?
Tuesday and Wednesday. It is open 8.30am to 4pm on the other five days.
Can you take builders waste from my extension?
Yes, and that is most of what we lift on the newer estates here. The recycling centre will not take it if a tradesperson produced it, which is usually why people ring.
