- Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, with anything being kept set aside before a single item is loaded.
- End of tenancy clearance. Bulky collections here run on Mondays, so a hand-back later in the week sits waiting on one. Cleared in a single visit instead, back to bare floors and ready to re-let.
- Hoarder clearance. Gone through by hand rather than shovelled. In the Dutch Quarter the stairs set the pace: more than sixty of the weavers' houses on those streets are still standing, and nothing comes down them quickly. Papers and photographs come out first.
- Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. Where a terrace has no garage the shed at the bottom of the garden is doing that job instead, and it is usually full.
- Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In a weaver's house the staircase is the whole problem, and we would rather see it before quoting than after.
- Storage unit clearance. A council special collection here runs £77 for up to six items and £100 for six to twelve. A unit is emptied in one visit so the hire on it can be closed.
What the city council charges, and where it stops
Colchester City Council runs a special collection and publishes the figures: £77 for up to six large household items and £100 for six to twelve. Electrical items are priced separately, most at £19, with fridges and freezers at £39 each. Bulky collections happen on Mondays.
Twelve items is the ceiling, and a house is not twelve items. The other thing worth knowing before you book is that the collection begins where you leave it. In the Dutch Quarter or on a New Town terrace, getting a wardrobe from a first-floor bedroom to the kerb is not the easy part of the job, it is the job.
Colchester Recycling Centre is the other route, at 221 Shrub End Road, CO3 4RN. Household waste only, and you can book a van in.
Questions we get asked about this
The staircase is narrow and turns. Will things fit?
Some will not, so they come apart on the landing rather than get forced round the turn. That is normal in these houses and it is in the price.
Can you park near a house in the Dutch Quarter?
Rarely right outside. It becomes a carry to wherever we can legally stand, which we price in rather than add on afterwards.
Do you take the shed at the bottom of the garden too?
Yes, and on the terraces it is usually where half the clearance is.
