Who actually collects what in Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire splits the job in two, and knowing which half you are dealing with saves a phone call to the wrong number. Ten borough and district councils collect the bins and run the bulky waste collections: Broxbourne, Dacorum, East Herts, Hertsmere, North Herts, St Albans, Stevenage, Three Rivers, Watford and Welwyn Hatfield. The county council runs the recycling centres and disposes of everything the districts collect.

They have worked together as the Hertfordshire Waste Partnership since 1992, which is why the recycling centres feel like one network while the bulky collection price changes the moment you cross a district line. If you are comparing what a clearance costs against what your council charges, it is your district you want, not the county.

The same prices in Hertfordshire

There is one price list and Hertfordshire is on it. Send a photograph of what needs shifting on WhatsApp and you get the load size and the figure back, rather than being asked to guess it yourself.

  • A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
  • You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
  • The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
  • It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.

What house clearance in Hertfordshire takes in

What a whole-property clearance covers, wherever in the county it is.

Get a price for this
  • Bereavement clearance. Ten district and borough councils collect across Hertfordshire, so the council side of a probate differs from one town to the next even where the house does not. It goes at the family's pace, room by room, and what is being kept is set aside first.
  • End of tenancy clearance. There are sixteen recycling centres in the county, so there is usually one within reach of the let, though not one of them takes waste from a business. A let is taken back to bare floors and photographed the same week.
  • Hoarder clearance. Sorted rather than shovelled, wherever in the county it is. Hertfordshire reads a free ePass at the gate instead of taking bookings, so there is no slot to lose when a room takes longer than expected. Anything of value is put aside for you.
  • Shed clearance. Sheds and stores emptied and swept out along with the house.
  • Attic clearance. Lofts cleared and carried down.
  • Storage unit clearance. A household can hold three ePasses at most, and the van and trailer one is for Hertfordshire residents only. So a unit of any size is rarely a car job. We empty it and hand it back.

Sixteen recycling centres, and why that is not the whole answer

The county council runs sixteen household recycling centres, at Berkhamsted, Bishop's Stortford, Elstree, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Hoddesdon, Letchworth, Potters Bar, Rickmansworth, Royston, St Albans, Stevenage, Turnford, Ware, Waterdale at Garston and Welwyn Garden City. For a county this size that is a genuinely good network and most people are close to one.

What it does not solve is a houseful. A car at a time is a car at a time, however near the site is, and a household gets one van and trailer ePass between it. The reason people ring somebody for a whole property is almost never that the tip is far away. It is that a property does not fit in the number of trips anybody wants to make.

Opening days and hours vary from site to site across those sixteen, sometimes a lot, so it is worth checking the one you are heading for rather than assuming the county runs to one timetable. It does not.

Jobs like this one

Three of the twelve, and they are what a whole-property job looks like anywhere in the county: a room emptied, a load taken out to the road, and a garage taken back to bare block.

House Clearance, town by town

We also cover Hatfield, Ware, Letchworth, Hitchin, Buntingford, Royston and Sawbridgeworth and the villages between them. Those do not have a page of their own yet, so ring and ask.

Questions we get asked about this

Ask us something else
Which council do I ring about a bulky collection?

Your district or borough, not the county. There are ten of them in Hertfordshire and they each set their own price.

Do I need to book a recycling centre visit in Hertfordshire?

No. Hertfordshire uses an ePass and a camera at the gate rather than a booking. That is the opposite of Essex, which books every visit.

Do you cover the whole county?

We work across Hertfordshire, Essex and London. The towns with a page of their own are listed below, and if you are between them it is still worth ringing to ask.
