A town that was drawn before it was built, and what that means

Welwyn Garden City was laid out from 1920 under Louis de Soissons, who with Arthur Kenyon designed more than half the houses in it: neo-Georgian, mostly red brick with sash windows, running from modest terraces, cottages and maisonettes up to large detached houses. Almost the whole of that original town is a conservation area with its own Design Code.

It was made a New Town in 1948 and the Development Corporation built heavily through the 1950s, mainly east of the railway. The practical effect for a clearance is that this is a town of planned estates with proper access roads. Compared with a medieval market town it is straightforward, and the constraint is usually the maisonette staircase rather than the street.

  • A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
  • You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
  • The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
  • It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.

What house clearance in Welwyn Garden City takes in

What a whole-property job here usually takes in.

Get a price for this
  • Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, with anything being kept set aside first.
  • End of tenancy clearance. Between tenancies, back to bare floors so the place can be photographed and re-let.
  • Hoarder clearance. Sorted rather than shovelled. Paperwork, photographs and anything of value come out first and go to you.
  • Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. On the planned estates the store or garage is generally a separate structure and it is generally full.
  • Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In a maisonette that stair is the whole timetable.
  • Storage unit clearance. A storage unit emptied and handed back so the rent stops.

An unusually good local tip, and what it still will not solve

Welwyn Garden City has one of the better arrangements in the county. The recycling centre on Tewin Road, AL7 1BD, is open seven days a week, 10am to 6pm, all year. It replaced the old Cole Green site in March 2023 and it has a large purpose-built reuse shop, so decent furniture can be left for somebody else rather than tipped.

For a few items that is genuinely the right answer and we will tell you so. Where it stops is volume and handling. A whole property does not fit in a car, the van and trailer ePass is one per household, and every load still has to come down the stairs and into the vehicle before any of it goes anywhere.

That carrying is what a clearance actually is. The tip solves the disposal. It does not solve the three flights or the eleven trips.

Questions we get asked about this

Ask us something else
Will you take things to the reuse shop rather than tip them?

If something is genuinely reusable we would rather it was reused, and we will say so when we see it. We do not promise where each item ends up, because that would be a claim we cannot evidence.

The flat is a maisonette with a shared stair. Is that a problem?

No, it is normal here. Tell us which floor when you ring so the figure is right the first time.

Do you clear the garage block as well?

Yes, and on these estates that is often where most of the volume is.
