A town built to a plan, and it shows in the clearance
Stevenage was designated Britain's first New Town in 1946 and built out in six neighbourhoods: Stoney Hall and Monks Wood occupied first in 1951, Bedwell in 1952, Broadwater and Shephall in 1953, Chells through the 1960s. Bedwell is the pattern for a lot of it, two-storey two and three bedroom houses, small blocks of flats and bungalows on curved roads and cul-de-sacs with broad verges.

What house clearance in Stevenage takes in
What a whole-property job takes in on the New Town estates and in the older streets.
- Bereavement clearance. Stevenage was designated the first New Town in 1946 and its earliest estates were occupied from 1951, so a probate here is usually in a house of that generation. It goes at the family's pace and anything being kept comes out before the load starts.
- End of tenancy clearance. The borough charges a flat £51.00 for up to three bulky items and £14.00 for each one above that, to a maximum of ten. A whole let is cleared in one visit and left ready to photograph.
- Hoarder clearance. Worked through rather than shovelled out. The Caxton Way site opens every day from 10am, but a hoarded house is more than a car will shift whatever the hours are. Papers, photographs and anything worth keeping come out first.
- Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. On these estates the shed or the store is usually carrying seventy years of accumulation.
- Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down, and in a small block of flats that stair sets the timetable.
- Storage unit clearance. An ePass covers a van or a trailer here, and a business address cannot hold one at all. A unit is cleared out by us instead, so nothing is being paid to store it.
What the borough charges, and what ten items does not cover
Stevenage Borough Council changed its bulky waste pricing in January 2026 to a flat rate: £51.00 for up to three items, then £14.00 for each item above that, capped at ten. It is simpler than the tiered system it replaced and for a handful of items it is the sensible option.
Ten items is the ceiling though, and a house is not ten items. It is a houseful. The other thing a per-item price hides is that you are still the one getting each of those ten things out of the property and to the collection point.
The tip on Caxton Way, SG1 2DF, is open seven days a week from 10am to 5.30pm, which is generous. It is still a car at a time, and a house clearance is not a car at a time.

The flat is up two flights with no lift. Does that cost extra?
No. The carry is part of the job and it is inside the load price. Just tell us the floor when you ring so the figure is right first time.
Can you park on the verge outside?
Usually there is room on these estates, which is one of the reasons a Stevenage clearance tends to run quickly.
Is it cheaper to book the council collection for some of it?
For three items, yes, and we will tell you so. Past ten items it is not an option at all, and that is where a load price starts making sense.
