Terraces that open onto the pavement, and a city that moves in July
The Mill Road conservation area, designated in 2018, splits either side of the railway into Petersfield to the west and Romsey to the east. Most of what lines Mill Road went up in the 1880s and 1890s, and the terraces on the north side open straight onto the pavement with their gardens hidden away behind them. There is no side access and no rear access worth the name.
The other thing about Cambridge is the calendar. Romsey in particular is full of Victorian terraces let to students, the city has enough houses in multiple occupation that planning policy talks about controlling them, and a large share of them change hands in the same few weeks of the summer. That is when an end-of-tenancy clearance stops being one job and becomes a queue.

- A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
- You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
- The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
- It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.
What house clearance in Cambridge takes in
What a whole-property job in Cambridge usually takes in.
- Bereavement clearance. A probate at the family's pace, room by room, with anything being kept set aside before anything is loaded.
- End of tenancy clearance. Between tenancies, back to bare floors ready to re-let. In this city that is the most common version of this job and it is usually against a date.
- Hoarder clearance. Sorted rather than shovelled. Paperwork, photographs and anything of value come out first and go to you.
- Shed clearance. Emptied and swept out. On a Mill Road terrace the shed at the end of the garden is doing the work a garage would do elsewhere.
- Attic clearance. Cleared and carried down. In a let with three or four bedrooms in use, the loft is usually holding whatever the last four tenancies left.
- Storage unit clearance. A storage unit emptied and handed back so the rent on it stops.
Twelve visits a year, one permit per household
Cambridgeshire does this differently again. There is no slot to book, but there is a permit: free, one per household, Cambridgeshire residents only, and it allows twelve visits in twelve months. It covers vans, crew cabs, combi vans, pick-ups and larger trailers, and the vehicle must be no more than 5.5 metres long and 2.3 metres high.
Twelve visits a year sounds generous until you are clearing a four-bedroom let in a week. The nearest site is Milton Recycling Centre on Butt Lane, CB24 6DQ, which is outside the city, so each of those visits is a drive out and back through Cambridge traffic.
The city council will collect instead: a minimum £40 covering up to three items, then £6.50 each for items four to nine. Watch how items are counted though, because a three-seater sofa counts as three of them and takes the whole £40 by itself.

Questions we get asked about this
Can you clear a student let between tenancies?
Yes, and it is a lot of what we do here. Give us the handover date and the quote is built around getting it done before it.
There is nowhere to park on Mill Road. How does that work?
It becomes a carry to wherever we can legally stand, which is priced in rather than added later. Tell us the street when you ring.
Is it worth me doing tip runs first?
Only if you have permit visits spare and a suitable vehicle. There are twelve a year per household and Milton is outside the city, so for a full property it usually is not.
