Drovers Way, and the two things that catch people out

Chelmsford Recycling Centre is on Drovers Way, CM2 5PH, run by Essex County Council. It takes vans, pick-ups and large trailers, and it is open 9am to 5pm from 1 March to 15 October and 9am to 4pm through the winter.

The first catch is that you have to book a slot, unless you are a Blue Badge holder, on foot or on a bike. The second is what counts as household waste. Business, trade and commercial waste is not accepted at any Essex recycling centre, and neither is waste a tradesperson generated working at your house.

So a bathroom you ripped out yourself is household waste. The same bathroom, taken out by a fitter, is not, and it is turned away at the gate. That is the honest reason a refit ends up needing somebody with a vehicle rather than a Saturday morning.

Can I book a van into Drovers Way myself?

For your own household waste, yes. Not for anything a tradesperson produced at your house, and not for business waste, which is refused at every Essex site.

Do I need to be there while you load?

Only to let us in and agree what is going. After that you can leave us to it, and we sweep up before we go.

Is fly-tipped waste on shared parking our responsibility?

If it is on private land, the landowner or the management company usually has to deal with it. We clear it and invoice whoever is arranging it.
