What piles up in Chelmsford, and what it takes to reach it
A city the size of Chelmsford produces two very different jobs. On the estates and the newer developments it is garden waste, a garage that has filled up, and bulky single items nobody can shift alone. Around the centre, where a lot of the older stock has been split into flats, it is bin store overspill and waste left on communal parking after somebody moves out.
Access is what moves the price, not the pile. A drive is a straight load out. A second floor flat with a shared stairwell, or a terrace with the front door on the pavement, is a carry, and that is normal work here rather than an exception.

- A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
- You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
- The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
- It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.
Rubbish removal in Chelmsford is the same job under another name
Rubbish removal, rubbish clearance and waste clearance all describe one thing: a pile that needs to be gone. Same vehicle, same price list, same people, so it gets one page here instead of three pages competing with each other for the same search.
What waste clearance in Chelmsford takes in
The jobs this covers in Chelmsford, and what each means here.
- Garage clearance. Front to back, down to a swept floor and bare walls, including whatever is up in the rafters.
- Garden clearance. Green waste, hedge cuttings, turf and the pile down the side of the house. On the terraces it is a barrow route out to the road.
- Builders waste clearance. Plasterboard, timber, packaging and rubble off an extension or a refit, carried out through the house if there is no side access.
- Fly-tip clearance. Waste dumped on communal parking, a verge or an access road, lifted and the surface swept back. Common where the older houses have been split into flats.
- Wait and load service. The van waits, we load, and it goes on the same visit. No skip on the drive for a week and no permit needed to stand one on the road.
- Hazardous waste clearance. Some of what comes out of a garage or a shed cannot travel with general waste. Tell us what it is beforehand and you get a straight answer on whether we can take it.
- Warehouse clearance and rip out. Warehouses emptied and ripped out, racking and fittings included.
- Shop clearance and rip out. Shop fits stripped and cleared, counters, shelving and signage, ready to hand the unit back.
Drovers Way, and the two things that catch people out
Chelmsford Recycling Centre is on Drovers Way, CM2 5PH, run by Essex County Council. It takes vans, pick-ups and large trailers, and it is open 9am to 5pm from 1 March to 15 October and 9am to 4pm through the winter.
The first catch is that you have to book a slot, unless you are a Blue Badge holder, on foot or on a bike. The second is what counts as household waste. Business, trade and commercial waste is not accepted at any Essex recycling centre, and neither is waste a tradesperson generated working at your house.
So a bathroom you ripped out yourself is household waste. The same bathroom, taken out by a fitter, is not, and it is turned away at the gate. That is the honest reason a refit ends up needing somebody with a vehicle rather than a Saturday morning.

Questions we get asked about this
Can I book a van into Drovers Way myself?
For your own household waste, yes. Not for anything a tradesperson produced at your house, and not for business waste, which is refused at every Essex site.
Do I need to be there while you load?
Only to let us in and agree what is going. After that you can leave us to it, and we sweep up before we go.
Is fly-tipped waste on shared parking our responsibility?
If it is on private land, the landowner or the management company usually has to deal with it. We clear it and invoice whoever is arranging it.
