What has to come through the house, and why
On the Victorian terraces around Mill Road and Romsey the garden is behind the house and there is no way to it except through the house. Anything that accumulates out there, garden waste, an old shed, a broken mower, a sofa somebody left, has to come back through the hallway to reach a vehicle.
That is the whole shape of waste clearance in this city, and it is why a photograph of the pile alone is only half the information. What we need to know is the route out. On the newer developments north and east of the centre it is an ordinary load off a drive and the job takes a fraction of the time.

What waste clearance in Cambridge takes in
The jobs this covers here, and what each means locally.
- Garage clearance. Front to back to a swept floor and bare walls, or the garden store that is doing the same job on a terrace.
- Garden clearance. Green waste, hedge cuttings and turf, carried back through the house where that is the only route to the road.

Milton, the permit, and the line the county draws hard
Milton Recycling Centre on Butt Lane, CB24 6DQ, is the nearest site to the city and it is not in the city. From April to September it runs 9am to 8pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm at weekends; October to March it is 9am to 4pm every day, and the gates shut ten minutes before closing. Nothing to book.
The permit is the constraint rather than the opening hours. One per household, Cambridgeshire residents only, twelve visits in twelve months, and required for a van, a crew cab, a combi van, a pick-up or a larger trailer.
And the county draws the trade line harder than either of its neighbours. Business waste is defined as waste arising from any trade, business, industrial or commercial activity, and the council states plainly that a business presenting its waste as household waste at one of these sites is committing a criminal offence. That is not a warning to ignore on behalf of a builder who offers to take your rip-out to the tip.

Questions we get asked about this
My builder said he would take it to the tip. Is that fine?
It is not, and it is worth knowing why. Waste a tradesperson produced at your house is business waste, and the county council says presenting it as household waste at a recycling centre is a criminal offence.
Do I need a permit for a car?
No. The permit covers vans, crew cabs, combi vans, pick-ups and larger trailers. A car boot is fine without one.
Everything has to come through the house. Does that cost more?
