Where the waste is in Saffron Walden, and how far it has to travel
Two different jobs again, and here the split is town against village. Inside the conservation area the streets are medieval, so there is often nowhere to put a vehicle within sight of the front door, and the load is barrowed out to wherever it can legally stand. In the villages around the town the plots run long, the outbuildings are older, and what has accumulated has usually been accumulating for decades.
That distance is the whole of the price difference. It is not that the pile is bigger, it is that every barrow load is a hundred yards instead of ten. We would rather tell you that when you ring than discover it on the day.
Load sizes and prices
Our own price list| Load size | Waste | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full load | Mixed waste | £400 |
| Three-quarter load | Mixed waste | £300 |
| Half load | Mixed waste | £220 |
| Quarter load | Mixed waste | £120 |
| Clean wood load | Single material | £300 |
| Hardcore load | Single material | £280 |
These are the load prices off our own price list. You are told the load size and the price before anything is booked, so there is nothing to work out at the end of the job.

Tick off what you have got and it works out the load size and the price. It is an indication and we confirm it before anything is booked.

- A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
- You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
- The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
- It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.
Rubbish removal in Saffron Walden is this same job
Rubbish removal, rubbish clearance and waste clearance are three names for one thing: a pile that needs to be gone. It is the same vehicle and the same published price list whichever phrase you searched for, so there is one page for it rather than three chasing each other.
What waste clearance in Saffron Walden takes in
The jobs this covers here, and what each one means locally.
- Garage clearance. Front to back, down to a swept floor and bare walls. On the village plots that is often decades of tools, timber and tins.
- Garden clearance. Green waste, hedge cuttings, turf and the pile at the bottom of a long garden, barrowed out to the vehicle.
- Builders waste clearance. Plasterboard, timber, packaging and rubble off an extension or a refit, carried through the house when there is no side access at all.
- Fly-tip clearance. Waste dumped on a verge, a track or a field gateway. Rural fly-tipping is a different problem from urban fly-tipping and it usually needs a vehicle that can get onto soft ground.
- Wait and load service. The van waits, we load it, and it goes on the same visit. It matters more here, because a skip on a medieval street is often not an option at all.
- Hazardous waste clearance. Some of what comes out of an old outbuilding cannot travel with general waste. Tell us what it is before the day and you get a straight answer.
- Warehouse clearance and rip out. Warehouses emptied and ripped out, racking and fittings included.
- Shop clearance and rip out. Shop fits stripped and cleared, ready to hand the unit back.
Thaxted Road, and the booking that catches people out
Saffron Walden Recycling Centre is on Thaxted Road, CB10 2SG. It takes vans, pick-ups and large trailers, and it opens 9am to 5pm from 1 March to 15 October and 9am to 4pm through the winter.
You have to book a slot before you turn up, unless you are a Blue Badge holder, on foot or on a bike. It is household waste only and commercial waste is refused, and so is anything a tradesperson produced doing work at your house, which is the part that catches a refit out.
For anybody in the outlying villages there is a second cost the price list never shows, which is the round trip and the booked slot you have to be back for. That is usually what decides it rather than the gate fee.

Questions we get asked about this
There is nowhere to park a van near the house. What happens?
It gets barrowed to wherever we can legally stand, and that is priced in rather than added on. Give us the street when you ring.
Can you reach a property down a farm track?
Usually. Tell us what the track is like after rain, because that decides which vehicle comes rather than whether one does.
Is a skip not simpler?
On a lot of these streets there is nowhere legal to put one. That is the reason the van waiting while we load tends to suit this town.
