What accumulates on a rural plot, and why it stays there
Plots out here are bigger, so what collects on them is bigger too: green waste and hedge cuttings by the trailer load, an old shed that has finally gone through, fencing, and the pile at the bottom that has been there long enough to have brambles through it.
The reason it stays there is not laziness, it is that the nearest recycling centre is in another town. Anything that will not fit in a car boot needs a van, a booked slot and a round trip, so it waits. That is the honest explanation for most of what we lift in this area.

- A photo tells us the load size straight away, so you get a real price instead of a range.
- You are not asked to guess whether it is a half load or a full one. That is our job.
- The price you are given is the price you pay, and it covers the labour and the disposal.
- It goes straight to us, not to a call centre, and we are the ones who come back to you.
Rubbish removal in Great Dunmow is this same job
Rubbish removal, rubbish clearance and waste clearance are three names for one thing out here: a pile that needs to be gone. Same vehicle, same published price list, so it gets one page rather than three.
What waste clearance in Great Dunmow takes in
The jobs this covers locally, and what each one means here.
- Garage clearance. Front to back, to a swept floor and bare walls. On a village plot that is usually decades of tools, tins and timber.
- Garden clearance. Green waste, hedge cuttings, turf and brash. This is the biggest single category of work in this area by some distance.
- Builders waste clearance. Plasterboard, timber, packaging and rubble off an extension, which out here usually has a drive to load from.
- Fly-tip clearance. Waste dumped on a verge, a track or a field gateway. Rural fly-tipping needs a vehicle that can get onto soft ground, which is a different problem from clearing a car park.
- Wait and load service. The van waits, we load, and it goes on the same visit. Out here that saves a skip standing on a drive for a week waiting to be collected from a distance.
- Hazardous waste clearance. Some of what comes out of an old outbuilding cannot travel with general waste. Tell us what it is before the day and you get a straight answer.
- Warehouse clearance and rip out. Warehouses and barns emptied and ripped out, fittings included.
- Shop clearance and rip out. Shop fits stripped and cleared, ready to hand the unit back.
Twenty-one recycling centres in Essex, and none of them here
Essex County Council's own list runs to 21 recycling centres. Great Dunmow does not have one. For anybody in the town or the villages around it, the nearest listed sites are Saffron Walden on Thaxted Road, CB10 2SG, and Braintree on Springwood Drive, CM7 2YN.
Both need a slot booked in advance unless you are a Blue Badge holder, on foot or on a bike, and booking is free either online or on 0345 743 0430. Both take household waste only. Neither will accept business waste, or waste a tradesperson produced doing work at your house.
So for a rural property the real cost of doing it yourself is not the gate fee, which is nothing. It is the van, the booked slot, the drive and the number of times you have to repeat it. That is the comparison worth making before you ring anybody, including us.

Questions we get asked about this
How far out do you go?
Across the villages around Great Dunmow. Give us the postcode when you ring and the figure you are given already covers getting there.
Can you get down a farm track?
Usually. Tell us what it is like after rain, because that decides which vehicle comes rather than whether one does.
Would a skip be cheaper?
For a long job with a drive to stand it on, sometimes. For one clear-out it is usually not, because you are paying for the skip to sit there and you still do all the lifting.
