A research city, and the fit-outs it gets through
Most of the commercial floorspace worth naming here sits north of the city. Cambridge Science Park is on Milton Road, St John's Innovation Park is a couple of miles north of the centre near junction 33 of the A14 and a short walk from the Science Park, and Cambridge Business Park sits against the A14 as well. St John's Innovation Centre was founded by the college in 1987 and was the first in Europe aimed at knowledge-based businesses.
What that produces is a steady churn of fit-outs. Companies grow, move, merge or fold, and each of those is a suite going back to a lettable state: partitions, benching, cabling, server racks, kitchens. The parks themselves are straightforward to work in, with loading access and space. The awkward jobs are the older offices in the city centre, where a permit street and a narrow stair replace the loading bay.

What office clearance in Cambridge takes in
What a commercial job takes in on the research parks and in the city, and where each one ends.
- Soft strip out. Back to shell. Partitions, ceiling grid, floor boxes, fitted kitchens, benching and storage out, floor swept end to end.
- Renovation clearance. Taken away as the work runs rather than after it, which on a park with shared service yards is what keeps you on good terms with the neighbours.
- Outbuilding clearance and demolition. A derelict outbuilding or store taken down and cleared, which is a different job from emptying one.
- Construction site clearance and strip out. Cleared while the build runs and stripped before it opens. Access, hours and shared yards are the first three questions on a park.
- Land clearing. Plots, yards and service ways cleared of what has been dumped or grown over them, and left flat.
Here it is not just refused, it is an offence
Every county on our patch bars business waste from its household recycling centres. Cambridgeshire says what that means more directly than the others: business waste is waste arising from any trade, business, industrial or commercial activity, and a business presenting its waste as household waste at one of these sites is committing a criminal offence.
That is worth taking seriously when somebody offers to clear your office in a transit at a price that looks too good. The permit scheme is for households, it is one per household, and it was never a route for a unit on the Science Park.
A commercial clearance here goes to a transfer station. It is loaded, taken away and disposed of, and what can be recycled is recycled, with the load size and the figure in writing before anything starts.
