The council's bulky collection will not take DIY or construction material at all: no rubble, no masonry, no tiles, no construction waste, no fencing. Its own page tells residents to use the commercial waste service instead. So the moment a kitchen or a bathroom comes out of a flat, the household route has closed.

Rubbish removal, rubbish clearance and waste clearance mean one thing here: a pile that has to leave a building that was not designed for it to leave. One vehicle, one published list, and therefore one page rather than three.
What waste clearance in Hackney takes in
The jobs this covers in Hackney, including the ones the council refuses outright.
- Garage clearance. Where there is one. In Hackney it is far more often a basement cage, a bin store or a cupboard under the communal stairs.
- Garden clearance. Small gardens, yards and roof terraces. Green waste here comes out through the flat rather than round the side, which is the part people forget.
- Builders waste clearance. Plasterboard, timber, tiles, kitchen units and rubble. This is the load the council explicitly will not collect, and it is the most common thing we are rung about in this borough.
- Fly-tip clearance. Waste dumped in a bin store, an alley or against a wall. Cleared, and the ground swept after, because leaving a clean surface is half of why anybody rings.
- Wait and load service. Loaded while we are there and gone when we leave. On a Hackney street with no permit and nowhere to stand a skip, that is often the only version that works at all.
- Hazardous waste clearance. Some of what comes out of a flat refit cannot travel with general waste, and Hackney refuses it outright on its bulky service. Tell us what is in there before the day and you will get a straight yes or no on whether it can travel.
- Warehouse clearance and rip out. Warehouses and studios emptied and ripped out, fittings included. Around Hackney Wick that is a regular job.

The council will not take rubble, and the tip is in another borough
Two published rules do all the work here. The first: Hackney's bulky collection excludes DIY and construction materials completely, including rubble, masonry, tiles, construction waste and fencing, and the council directs residents to its commercial service for them. It also refuses hazardous, unsafe, infested and wet items.
The second: there is no recycling centre in Hackney. The nearest are in Islington, Waltham Forest and Haringey, a van needs a booking a day in advance, each site takes ten vans a day, and a household is capped at five van visits per financial year. For a kitchen strip that is not a plan, it is a rationing system.
So the practical route for anything heavier than furniture is a company with a vehicle and a transfer station. Ours is priced off a published load list, the £12.50 ULEZ line is shown separately for inside the zone, and the whole figure is in writing before we book you in.
