There is a very specific gap in Hackney and it is where most of our work here comes from. The council's bulky collection will not take DIY or construction material at all: no rubble, no masonry, no tiles, no construction waste, no fencing. Its own page tells residents to use the commercial waste service instead. So the moment a kitchen or a bathroom comes out of a flat, the household route has closed.

On top of that the borough has no tip of its own and a household gets five van visits a year to somebody else's. Between those two facts, a normal refit in a normal Hackney flat has no free way out. That is not a sales line, it is the council's own published position, and it is why a load price with a figure attached is usually the cheapest honest answer.

  • Garage clearance. Where there is one. In Hackney it is far more often a basement cage, a bin store or a cupboard under the communal stairs.

The council will not take rubble, and the tip is in another borough

Two published rules do all the work here. The first: Hackney's bulky collection excludes DIY and construction materials completely, including rubble, masonry, tiles, construction waste and fencing, and the council directs residents to its commercial service for them. It also refuses hazardous, unsafe, infested and wet items.

The second: there is no recycling centre in Hackney. The nearest are in Islington, Waltham Forest and Haringey, a van needs a booking a day in advance, each site takes ten vans a day, and a household is capped at five van visits per financial year. For a kitchen strip that is not a plan, it is a rationing system.
